What I'd Put on the Registry: My Non-Toxic Nursery Checklist for Baby #2
Hi, I'm Isabelle, Senior Marketing Manager here at Kudos, a "scrunchy" mom who happens to work in this industry, and come November, a mom of two. I'll be honest with you: I'm not planning a baby shower or a registry this time around. But going through it all again has me thinking a lot about what's earned a permanent spot in our home and a top priority for our nursery the second time around, and what I'd put on a registry if I were building a non-toxic nursery again from scratch.
I don't claim to do any of this perfectly (show me the parent who does !!!!), I just try my best, lean on what I learned the first time, and put my energy where it touches my baby most. So consider this the honest brain dump I wish someone had handed me when I was prepping the nursery for my first. These are my real, second-time-around priorities.
Why a Non-Toxic Nursery Feels So Hard to Get Right
If you've ever stood in an aisle (or fallen a hundred browser tabs deep) trying to figure out whether something is truly clean, you are not imagining it. A lot of products sold in the U.S. aren't required to disclose their full ingredient lists, so a single word like "fragrance" on a label can stand in for hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. Plenty of brands have also gotten very good at greenwashing, leaning on words like "natural" and "gentle" without the ingredients (or the certifications) to back them up.
That's exactly why third-party certifications matter so much to me. When I can spot an OEKO-TEX®, GOTS, GREENGUARD Gold, or EWG Verified seal… it takes a lot of the late-night guesswork out of it. Here's where I've landed:
My Non-Toxic Nursery Checklist:
Diapers and wipes: Kudos
I'd put these on the list even if I didn't work here (it's honestly part of why I do). Many disposable diapers, even ones labeled "natural," have a plastic liner, and traditional wipes can contain ingredients like quats, potential carcinogens like 1,4-dioxane, and plastics that break down into microplastics.
Kudos diapers are made with a doctor-recommended 100% cotton liner and Total Chlorine-Free (TCF) wood pulp, so the only thing touching my baby's skin is soft, breathable cotton. They're also OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified at Class 1 (the strictest tier, reserved for products made for babies), use FSC-certified wood pulp, and tested non-detect for PFAS. The Kudos wipes are EWG Verified and made from 100% plastic-free, compostable fibers, so no microplastics during all those changes. After putting them through everything with my first, I'm very much not switching.
Laundry detergent: Branch Basics
Baby clothes, swaddles, and crib sheets sit against delicate skin for hours at a time, so detergent matters just as much as the fabric itself. I look for no synthetic fillers, no fragrances, no dyes, no optical brighteners, and no harsh preservatives, and Branch Basics Laundry Detergent checks every single box, lifting stains with the power of plants and minerals. A worry-free wash is one less thing rattling around my mom brain.
Surface cleaner: Branch Basics Concentrate
Babies touch everything and then go straight for their mouths, so whatever I clean with has to be something I'm completely comfortable with my baby contacting around the clock. The Branch Basics Concentrate is made from plants and minerals, with no harsh chemicals, fragrance, or hormone disruptors, and you simply dilute it with water to make a whole lineup of cleaners. The diluted All-Purpose Cleaner handles the changing table, the toys, the floors, and the truly impressive volume of little messes a nursery collects.
Crib and mattress: Nestig and Naturepedic
This is where I splurged the first time, and I have zero regrets. We have the Nestig "The Island" Wave Crib, a convertible that grows with our family, and we're reusing it again for baby number two. It's GREENGUARD Gold Certified, which means it was third-party tested and rigorously screened for more than 10,000 chemical emissions and VOCs. GREENGUARD Gold products are low-emitting and contribute to cleaner indoor air for your family (verified by the Baby Safety Alliance), and that kind of receipt is exactly what I want for the place my baby breathes all night long.
For the mattress, we went with Naturepedic, which is GOTS-certified organic and GREENGUARD Gold certified, with no polyurethane foam, PVC, or added flame retardants. We'll keep using ours, and since we're starting the new baby in the crib's mini configuration, I'll need a mini mattress too. I'm going right back to Naturepedic for it. When something is this central to where my baby sleeps, the certifications are worth every penny.
Crib sheets: Solly Baby
I will sing about these from the rooftops. Solly Baby crib sheets are my hands-down favorite, and yes, they're a splurge, but they are so freaking soft it's almost unfair. They're made from 100% certified TENCEL™ Modal (sourced from sustainably harvested Austrian beech wood trees), which is silky-soft, highly breathable, moisture-wicking, and gentle on sensitive baby skin. The fabric is OEKO-TEX® certified, so it's free from harmful substances, and it runs cooler to the touch and more breathable than standard cotton. I'm going with the Blush Floret Crib Sheet set this time, and I'll probably grab two different options while reusing the ones we already have.
Cotton wherever possible
More of a rule of thumb than a single product: for clothing and swaddles, I choose organic cotton whenever I can and look for a GOTS or OEKO-TEX certification so I know the claim is actually real. Burt's Bees Baby (affordable and GOTS-certified) has been a reliable, no-fuss pick for basics.
Bottles and feeding: Bibs
A little honesty here: this time around, I'm hoping to breastfeed more and pump less (fingers crossed this child and my boobs cooperate
for the sake of my sanity and sink). But realistically, for the feeds when I need a little extra sleep and for dad to tag in (wink wink), we'll still need our tried-and-true Bibs Glass Baby Bottles. I actually have a bunch of the glass bottles left over, which is a huge plus for going the glass route, so I'll just need new nipples and, let's be real, a few new colors for the new baby.
Here's why I love them…they grow with your kid: as they get older and start the sippy-cup phase, you can add a Baby Bottle Handle and switch to a more big-kid-friendly Bottle Silicone Spout Nipple. We genuinely never had spills with these, and I swear it's miracle glass, because in all the time we used them (which was far longer than most people do, since they became my daughter Millie's first sippy cup and she was obsessed) we only ever broke one bottle. They weren't sold to me as the most breast-like nipples out there, but they were the ones Millie fought the least and kept a willingness to breastfeed the most with, which counts for everything. And their nipples that I went with are BPA-free and made from 100% food-grade materials, and comply with the European Standard EN14350. Cute, clean and super easy.
Pacifiers: Frigg Daisy
We're a pacifier family, no shame here, and these are my pick: the Frigg Daisy natural rubber pacifiers. They're made in Denmark with a natural rubber latex nipple and are 100% free from BPA, BPS, PVC, and phthalates, which is exactly what I care about for something that basically lives in my baby's mouth. The fact that they're so cute, come in a fun variety of colors, and offer two sizes (size 1 for 0 to 6 months and size 2 for 6 to 18 months) is just the adorable cherry on top.
Baby skincare: Primally Pure "The Baby Kit"
For those delicate early days, I reach for Primally Pure's "The Baby Kit". It includes the Baby Balm, Baby Bar, Baby Oil, and Baby Powder, all infused with skin-soothing herbs, plant extracts, and healthy fats that deliver vitamin-rich moisture and lock in hydration. It's wonderfully multipurpose: the balm works on baby's bottom, cradle cap, growing bellies, and eczema flare-ups, and even on nursing nipples in those tender early breastfeeding days (something I will absolutely be grateful for again). Honestly, it's the gift that keeps giving. I'm still using the Baby Bar from my first daughter's kit for her baths to this day.
One Honorable Mention (Not Nursery, but Non-Negotiable for Me):
Not technically a nursery item, but worth a shout: I'm adding a double stroller, and I'm going with Nuna. They're my go-to for the exact same reason as everything else on this list. Their gear uses OEKO-TEX certified fabrics, is GREENGUARD Gold certified, and is made without added flame retardants (and PFAS-free, too). I'm still deciding on the right model for two littles, but I already know it'll be a Nuna.
Why Branch Basics Made My List?
Branch Basics goes way back for me. Before I was even pregnant with my first, swapping over to Branch Basics was one of my very first steps in making my and my husband's lives a little less toxic, and it's been a staple in our home ever since. When you add kids to the mix, that priority only gets bigger. Suddenly the floors you're mopping are the floors your baby is crawling and gumming all over, and the "good enough" cleaner you used to grab without thinking gets a much harder look.
It helps that I trust the people behind it. Branch Basics was founded in 2012 by Marilee Nelson, Allison Evans, and Kelly Love, three women whose own health journeys led them to discover how transformative a truly clean home could be. After years of chronic struggles, they found relief by removing synthetic ingredients from their lives, and turned that into a mission to help families create healthier homes (and actually understand their labels). They even famously paused their growing business to reformulate rather than sell anything they couldn't fully stand behind. That kind of transparency is exactly what keeps them on my list, pregnancy after pregnancy.
Small Swaps, Greater Peace of Mind
Doing this a second time, the biggest thing I've learned is that you don't have to overhaul everything overnight, and you definitely don't have to do it perfectly. A few thoughtful, well-vetted choices, from the diapers and wipes that touch your baby's skin to the mattress they sleep on, add up to a noticeably healthier space.
I'm a mom who works in this world and still just tries her best, and this is where I'm putting my energy this time around. No registry required.
